Crispin & Nicky's Wedding - Gravetye Manor & Balcombe Church, West Hoathly

The moment I heard all about Nicky & Crispin's day I knew that I was going to enjoy myself. It was in three parts but in a very unconventional order. Everyone met at Gravetye Manor first for drinks and delicious food and Nicky & Crispin very sensibly opted to have their photos taken before they left for Balcombe Church.

The atmosphere at Gravetye was wonderful because of all the Christmas decorations and being New Year's Eve everyone was very excited. Nicky arrived with her Mum and Sister with only her dress left to put on as everyone was enjoying drinks nearby. Her entrance was wonderful to lots of clapping and cheers. I then took the two of them on a mini-tour of Gravetye. It was tricky to keep Nicky's dress spotless for the Church but thanks to Emily & Libby we managed it.

The groups were tricky with me having to ask everyone to go next door to the lounge (I felt SO guilty) so that I could take the photos in the bar. Everyone was amazing and I really love the results.

I left for St Mary's Balcombe to find Rev Burton and the Choir enjoying the festive atmosphere inside the Church. They had an earlier wedding so were in high spirits. It was lovely to catch up with them all as the last time I was there was on 5th November. The guests started to arrive and Matthew had me in stiches as he guided Crispin into the Church (see his wonderful hand signalling in the slideshow). The two girls arrived looking gorgeous and were terribly excited to see their Daddy. With everyone inside it was time for Nicky & her Father to make their entrance. Nicky looked stunning and composed even when her eldest started to drag her Grandfather through the door and down the aisle. Who knew that a 2 year old was so strong?!

Even though Crispin had seen Nicky already there is nothing like seeing your bride walking down the aisle towards you. All was well until the final floor grill when Nicky's heel got stuck and caused a few seconds of concern followed by howls of laughter mainly from Nicky. The vicar then announced that no one had ever got stuck before which made everyone giggle even more. How's that for an entrance?!

The service was so beautiful and family-orientated. Jo-Anne & Sophie's readings, the exchange of vows and rings and finally the signing all had a wonderfully light and happy feel. We did a couple of shots to include the girls outside the Church and then Libby and the Guys set up a spectacular confetti run. Just down the road at the Half Moon was our final destination - mulled wine and cake for everyone... perfect.

I left at a very civilised 5pm and arrived home feeling so excited about the day. I loved working with you all and wish you both a long and happy marriage. Keep in touch! x

Jo & Charlie's Wedding - Balcombe & West Hoathly, West Sussex

How lovely to be able to do my first ever 'Uncle Ted' wedding! The 'Uncle Ted Award' goes to anyone offering outstanding assistance during a wedding & Charlie was only the 2nd ever recipient back in 2007. Since then I have photographed Charlie and now Jo a few times and so when they asked me to photograph their day I was absolutely thrilled.

While I was at Jo's home taking a few shots of her with Charlie-girl, Liz and Jo's parents Laura was photographing Charlie & his ushers enjoying their pub lunch. All was calm with Jo and I was so excited when I saw her Caroline Castigliano dress as it was stunning and needed it's own hanging rail! Zara delivered lovely bouquets and Antonia did an amazing job on Jo's hair (thanks for your help with the reflector). After a few family photos I left for the Church where I met up with Laura. It was great seeing Charlie's beaming face as he greeted his guests.

Jo arrived with Charlie-girl, Liz and two of the most adorable flower girls ever in the shape of Beatrice & Georgina. Watching them compare shoes and dresses with the older girls was so sweet and seeing them holding hands all the way to the Church was very touching. Jo arrived and took some getting out of the car, everyone trying desperately to keep her skirts off the ground, and managed it safely to the lychgate only for someone to pipe up, 'where are your flowers?' Ooops. A very small delay while they were collected and then Nick walked Jo down the aisle into a packed Church and both her and Charlie beamed when they met at the end.

The service was wonderful with readings from Simon & Emily, prayers from Andrew, the amazing sound from the army brass quintet & the Church choir of course. The vows and exchange of rings went smoothly with lots of smiles from everyone assembled. After signing the Register they walked back down the aisle and out to be greeted by Millie (along with her very smart bow) in a complete surprise for Jo and their joy at seeing each other was terrific. After the family groups they braved A LOT of confetti and set off in the Old Lady towards West Hoathly and Charlie's brother's home with an incredibly smart marquee ready to receive everyone for a drinks reception and speeches (very funny flags from Nick, Charlie making me scream laughing with his comparison to World leaders of Jo, Jeremy & poor Emily (!), and finally Jeremy with his tales of Charlie's charm from an early age).

We did a little stop off in a beautiful garden and with the help of wonderful Rachel we managed to manoeuver Jo's dress around safely and took some stunning photos. I love that Jo had her boots in the Old Lady all ready for a bit of stomping. Very impressive! [Rachel, thank you, Uncle Ted badge on the way - you were amazing!]

After the delicious meal, it being 5th November, there were fireworks and I was surprised to see that they went on for as long as our village display. How Charlie managed that I have no idea but they were REALLY impressive. Cake cutting (made beautifully by Imogen) was followed by a pretty impressive first dance (lots of giggling) and then the whole marquee fell onto the dance floor and were highly entertained by the Co Stars.

I managed a last shot in front of the marquee (always a good one for the last page of the album) and it looked great with the fairy lights and Charlie & Jo laughing as they had been all day.

Laura & I had a wonderful day and we both wish you a very happy future together and please keep in touch with all of your news. It was great to see you today and I'm so pleased that you had an amazing honeymoon. x

Gav & Babs' Wedding - Chiddingstone Castle, Edenbridge (Kent)

Gav & Babs got me excited from the moment we met because not only do I love working at Chiddingstone Castle but Babs had chosen a gorgeous Vera Wang dress. It was also really fantastic to follow their wedding blog which gave me a great insight into their family and friends.

I arrived at the beautiful Starborough Manor B&B to finally meet the two Charlies and Babs' wonderful Parents. It was a really great vibe because of all of the lovely space and I was thrilled to see that the B&B had a ballroom - perfect for photos. Charlie F proved a real whizz with my 2nd camera which was hysterical to watch. The flowers arrived and were quite simply stunning. When Babs was finally dressed I am so pleased that I had a few minutes to take a few shots of her and her Parents before I rushed off to Chiddingstone Castle.

Gav, Jon, Chris, Kai & Dominic were at the beautiful Orangery along with family and friends all excitedly waiting for the bride's arrival. The car arrived and the cameras all went crazy as Joseph walked Babs down the aisle. Wonderful readings from Charlie F and Chris and an emotional exchange of vows and rings before the Registrar announced that they were husband & wife. Cheers all around & lots of impromptu hugs and kisses before they ran the gauntlet back down the aisle to be absolutely covered in confetti. Little Dominic got right into the middle of the confetti cloud and screamed with delight - one of those classic moments that I will remember for years to come.

After some group and couple photos everyone took their seats for what I later learned was a delicious meal, elegant tea ceremony and finally some dancing into the night. Special thanks to Martin for helping me with the couple shots, and vitally to Joseph for helping me with the reflector. It's the first time the Father of the Bride has helped me and it was brilliant.

Thanks for having me with you on your day and to the two Charlies, Agnes, Jon, Chris & Kai who made it really easy and fun. Dominic was a delight and made the day very special too. And finally to Nathalie and the Team at Chiddingstone who were amazing to work with - it's a very special place anyway but you made it perfect.

It's not every day that I receive a picture as good as this one, depicting my studio and everthing in it right down to the fire and music playing. So I thought I'd share it with you as I think it's brilliant. It was done by Alice who came in on Sunday to have her photo taken. She even has me with my hair tied back and sat on what I call my, 'I'm feeling very old seat'.

Steph & Gavin's Wedding - The Barn at Greens Farm, Newdigate (Surrey)

When I first met Steph & Gavin in February I just loved the sound of their day at the Old Greens Barn at Greens Farm in Newdigate. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the venue - I think that thought I was quite mad when I asked about trees and tractors!

I started out at Steph's Mother's home where the girls were busy getting ready and I spied some of Ann's cake which drew my eye slightly. I had lunch with the families the day before and Ann's tiramasu is now stored in my brain and highlighted 'top 10 all time puddings'! I was so excited when I saw Steph's 1950s inspired dress as I have always wanted to photograph a calf length wedding dress. She looked absolutely stunning and her bouquet matched the overall look to perfection.

On to the Barn and Gavin, Geoff and family. I can't believe how gorgeous the decorations in the Barn were - just wonderful and the chairs matched the beams so beautifully. And then guests started arriving and filling the courtyard with excited chatter and lots of smiles. Steph arrived with Ann in a classic Jaguar and they walked into the Barn and down the aisle towards Gavin who was smiling broadly. The ceremony was personal and handled brilliantly by my favourite humanist celebrant, Martin Wooller, who I had the pleasure of working with back in 2007. Lovely readings from Rach & Izzy and a real buzz of joy from the assembled guests.

Out into the courtyard, glass of champagne and a few portraits around the dilapidated barns which were just perfect for photographs as their weather-beaten feel contrasted so well with Steph & Gavin's smart and elegant look. Champagne and canapes while I photographed the marquee and then suddenly huge cheers which made me think, 'what on earth am I missing?' A few minutes later I realised it was the confetti... ooops. Speedy confetti collection on my part, hysterical family groups (thanks for your patience everyone), and then the cake cutting with an everyone shot just before the meal was announced. And then everyone very sweetly threw confetti again and I feel so guilty as it went EVERYWHERE (looked fab though) and I spent the evening noticing it in everyone's hair and clothing.

Ann, Gavin and Geoff spoke to everyone in the marquee and raised so many smiles and laughs from everyone. The meal was delicious and provided by caterers from Wales who Gavin used to work with many years ago. It made it really personal and fun. And then the amazing band who had come up from Wales too. They really were fantastic - do check them out - Nancy & the Hitmen. I had asked Steph & Gavin about what kind of dance they were planning on and they kept VERY quite about the fact that they had learned a few pretty nifty moves. It was a stunning 1st dance and I was blown away. Apparently enough for me to do a combat roll without realising. How utterly embarrassing!

I left just as the party was in full swing and drove home happy and elated by a very special day. Thanks for having me there and I hope you like your photos. Lots of love and thanks. E xxx

David & Carolyn's Wedding - Copthorne Gatwick Hotel (West Sussex)

I was introduced to David & Carolyn by Jon whose sister's wedding I photographed back in 2007 and we immediately hit it off. They have a truly adorable daughter called Hollie who is one of the friendliest & happiest children I have ever met. We did some gorgeous shots in the studio and I loved how Hollie was keen to investigate everything.

Fast forward one year and to the big day itself and I started at home where the girls were all busy getting ready. It was an extremely calm environment and the horrendous rain certainly didn't dampen anyone's mood. I left before Carolyn was ready and when she walked down the aisle a little later she was transformed. She looked stunning and was preceeded by her sister, Julie, who had Zack & Hollie with her. They looked amazing, Zack in his little suit and Hollie in a gorgeous dress with her little wand. David was a little overcome and delighted to see the wedding party coming down the aisle. Him and the guys all looked extremely smart in their suits. David has the kind of smile that lights up a room so to see him and Carolyn standing at the foot of the aisle together, exchanging their vows, was a joy. Hollie delivered the rings beautifully and watched as her parents exchanged them. It was very sweet. Jamie did a wonderful reading before the Register was signed and they walked back down the aisle as husband and wife.

Sadly it was still raining so we did a few shots inside before the meal and then, towards the end of their reception, the sun finally appeared. We did a shot of everyone outside (horray) and everyone threw confetti to loud applause. The meal was absolutely delicious (yum... thank you) and was followed by the cake cutting & speeches from John, David & Michael. They were all full of laughter and tears and it was so funny when Hollie perked up at the mention of a present.

When everyone left the dining room the sun was absolutely beautiful, and gave off a gorgeous light over the stream. David & Carolyn very sweetly let me borrow them for a few shots outside and they are lovely. What a relief to have a few outside. And then it was time for their 1st dance and a bit of crazy dancing (esp. Jamie & Thomas who rocked it).

It was a pleasure to meet and work with you all - I had a blast from beginning to end. Big thanks also to Jon at Guernica Productions, and Richard & Angie at the Copthorne. You made it really easy & fun. Good luck to David & Carolyn & please keep in touch. xx

Alzheimer's Society & Rockinghorse Charity Dinner 9th July 2011 - Felbridge Copse (West Sussex)

Two weeks ago 150 gorgeous people attended a charity dinner at Felbridge Copse to raise money for two charities, the Alzheimer's Society & Rockinghorse. Loads of local companies and individuals gave very generous raffle and auction prizes and hosts Martin & Paul and Marshfield Palmer Events put on an amazing spread.

After a champagne reception entertained with beautiful guitar music, a cracking caricaturist, and a balloonologist & magician everyone took their seats in the stunningly decorated marquee. 'Heads & tails' started off the evening with much hilarity before a delicious meal and fabulous music.

Christopher Biggins handled the aution in a legendary fashion. He was hysterical from start to finish and his tempo didn't falter for even a second. Then dancing to some fabulous crooner numbers, the raffle and then lots more dancing late into the night.

Louise & Ryan's Wedding - Bingham Hotel, Richmond (Surrey)

I first met Louise at the end of 2007 when I did her PR headshot so when she wrote to me in March to tell me that she was getting married I was so excited. She is brilliant fun to work with and makes me laugh all the time so I couldn't wait to meet Ryan. We had a wonderful lunch and talked about their plans for their big day in Richmond and I knew that I'd love the Bingham Hotel. It is extremely stylish, borders the Thames and the staff are all amazing. I loved it.

When I arrived I loved being with Louise as she got ready because she had such a great team with her - Massi doing her hair (totally unflappable) and the gorgeous Mel Kinsman on make up. I have worked with before & rate very highly - she does an amazing job and is great fun. I met Louise's Parents and beautiful bridesmaids Elizabeth & Ella before heading to Ryan's room to grab a couple of shots of his gear as a Captain in the Royal Marines. And then a few shots of guys in the bar before the ceremony began. Louise's Father walked her into the room and down the extremely long aisle to lovely sounds from a three peice string collective.

The ceremony was great fun and there were fantastic readings by Ann & Fiona and once the register was signed they walked back down the aisle and out into the gorgeous sunshine. Everyone cheered as they passed through the guard of honour & then drinks and canapes as I took them off for a few shots in and around the hotel. Because it was such a sunny day and direct sun isn't great for photos I took them back into the hotel and then finished with a few shots outside next to the River under the canopy of a wonderful weeping willow.

And then a few groups before one of the highlights of the day - militray drummers. It was a truly fantastic spectacle and sounded amazing. The guys were fabulous. What a way to end a reception! Everyone then enjoyed a delicious meal before speeches by John, Ryan & Jamie (who really did produce some cracking reactions from everyone) plus an impromtu "I love you" from Ella which brought the house down.

Drinks outside in the lovely evening light and then sword cake cutting & the first dance. And then everyone did quite literally go mental on the dance floor much to Ella's bemusement. Thank you ALL for making it such a fun and enjoyable day - I had a ball. xx

Moya & Ben's Wedding - Clandon Park (Surrey)

I had already had a complete ball with Ben & Moya during their pre-wedding shoot and luckily they had 'introduced' me to most of their friends and family via photos and stories so I felt completely at home the moment I arrived at Moya's home and the girls, Mum & Aunt. Moya was super relaxed and I even had time to photograph them all before I left for Clandon. She looked amazing.

I arrived at Clandon Park to a general air of calm and met the guys for a few photos. Guests arrived and were ushered into the Tapestry Room and the excitement started to build. Moya arrived with Maureen and they were both smiling widely. The gorgeous walk from the entrance and through the Marble Hall is so spectacular and the girls all looked beautiful as they made their way towards Ben. The ceremony was very special with readings from Nicky, Fiona & Kevin and I have to admit to being slightly overcome when Ben & Moya exchanged their vows and rings. And then out into the Marble Hall for champagne and canapes plus lots of hugs & kisses.

Ben & Moya decided to take advantage of the lovely Armstrong Siddeley and went for a short drive while guests relaxed on the lawns, played crocket, and listened to the lovely sounds from Fiona's harp. On their return we did a mini-tour of the grounds of Clandon before the groups on the rear steps of the house. A wonderful everyone group shot on the front steps before everyone took their seats for one of the most delicious meals I have ever tasted. The fantastic Jay Tough (toastmaster) and I have a small joke about food since he 'stole' my steak at a wedding we worked at a few years ago so I was delighted to receive this most mouth-watering venison. Thanks so much you two. Jay decided to wipe the slate by getting access to the Clandon gardens later in the day for a beautiful shot of the sun going down. Thanks Jay - we're even!

Maureen, Ben and Ben made great speeches which caused a few tears as well as many laughs. I have to admit that by the time I took a few table shots it was getting pretty roudy (in a good way) so I knew that once the evening guests arrived and the dancing began that this crowd would really go for it. And I was proved right. I did a really fun Charlie's Angels shot with Nicky, Fiona & Andrea and took a few shots of everyone going crazy dancing-wise before heading home. Just as I was leaving I noticed a male guest wearing a ascinator as he strutted his stuff on the dancefloor. I understand from Ben & Moya that the party was brilliant and from the look of everyone's faces all day that doesn't surprise me. Lots of smiling, laughing and sheer joy.

Thank you to all of you for making me so welcome and helping me all day. Special mention to Nicky for looking after me (you've earned an Uncle Ted award just for being so lovely). Ben & Moya, it was a wonderful day, full of joy, and I am so pleased that I was there to share it with you both. Can't wait to share your photos with you today. xx

Mark & Layla's Wedding - West Heath School, Sevenoaks (Kent)

I loved working at West Heath in 2009 so was really looking forward to photographing Mark & Layla's big day there.

I started off at Layla's Mum's house which was so stylish and such a lovely backdrop to use for the girls' preparations. Trudy, Sangita & Jessica were all busy doing things as Louise helped Layla with her hair and make-up, and Viv put on the most amazing food spread for everyone. Layla was ready right on time and looked stunning - we took a few shots in the lovely garden before I left to get to West Heath and the guys.

Leon was there looking amazing in his suit and I grabbed a couple of shots of him with his Dad plus Greg & Kevin. The guests made their way into the fabulous red room for the ceremony as Layla's Dad waited in the beautiful lobby for her arrival. They looked amazing as they walked down the aisle and the ceremony was full of fun & laughter. Daniel read beautifully and I loved seeing the Registrar waving them off down the aisle. I think the TFI Friday theme tune was a MASSIVE surprise for everyone and it certainly made everyone roar with laughter.

Dave was waiting outside with champagne and I took a few shots of Leon, Layla & Mark by the car in front of the house. It was just beginning to rain so we went inside and the kids all went crazy with confetti from the top of the stairs. The everyone shot came out remarkably well in the end and we whistled through the group shots with a minimum of fuss. Everyone enjoyed drinks while I took just Layla & Mark outside for a few shots. And before we knew it it was time to go into their meal and speeches from Pete, Viv, Mark & Greg. I was delighted to have captured a really lovely shot of Leon as I left... Leon and his brand new dog toy - just perfect.

Thanks for all being so entertaining to work with and to Viv & Colin for making me feel so at home. It was a very special day. I heard from Layla that the evening party was riotous (in a good way) and that luckily someone stepped in to cut the cake with her while Mark was busy with the sound system. [A quick note about the sound system... it was the most enormous speaker set up that I have seen in 7 years so I'm a bit gutted to have missed out on hearing some tunes in the room. Apparently the floor was moving. Would have liked to see your 1st dance too - imagine that 'Ring of Fire' was a bit of a challenge!] x

Paul & Kaila's Wedding - Hartsfield Manor, Betchworth (Surrey)

When I met Paul & Kaila last year I knew that they were going to have a brilliant wedding because of their Welsh & Canadian heritage. These are two nations who know how to party! And I love working at Hartsfield Manor because the staff are always amazing and the house is so perfect for a private wedding.

When I arrived I was blown away by Kaila's Pronovias dress. I know that I shouldn't have favourites but this is a wedding dress designer who knows how to fit gorgeous brides and is absolutely in my top 3. While the girls finished getting ready I went and found Paul and the guys who looked great in their blue suits (another hit with me). As the guests arrived from far and wide Brian prepared to walk Kaila down the aisle preceeded by Nate as ring bearer who did a fantastic job. The ceremony was full of laughter and joy with a lovely reading by Sylvia. Special mention must go to the flowers which were absolutely stunning in the ceremony room, dining room and also the bouquets and buttonholes. I must find out from Kaila who did them as I would highly recommend whoever provided them. I took the usual signing of the Register shot before everyone else had a go and I found it hysterical that everyone seemed to take a shot but no-one moved from their seat. Very cavalier and original!

[Another first for me was an entire sweetie (candy if you are Nate reading this) shop on site like Woolworths but miles better because it all of the most popular sweets and they were all delicious. I was fascinated and found myself just staring at the display like a 5 year old...]

Out into wonderful sunshine (yippee) for some group photography and then a few of Paul & Kaila in and around the Manor. Into the beautifully decorated dining room and a delicious meal (thanks guys) interspersed with speeches done the Candian way - first Douglas who pretty much brought the house down, followed by Heather and her funny stories about Kaila at school, and next Brian with more stories from Kaila's childhood. Kaila and Melanie were in fits of laughter throughout. And then Paul with his brilliant first date cricket / sunburn story, and finally John who I think went pretty easy on Paul and provided the perfect finish.

Evening guests arrived in time for cake cutting and the first dance before everyone let their hair down on the dancefloor. To finish off their album I took a last shot in front of the Manor and bid everyone good night before heading home. Thanks so much to a wonderful set of ushers (Stuart & Lawrence the chair kings & Dan just for checking on me and keeping me updated) and bridesmaids (Melanie & Becky) who made my job so easy. And thanks also to Kaila & Paul's family & friends who made it a very special day. The Canada girls in particular all looked stunning and I'm so pleased that we got a great shot at the end.

Ben & Moya's Pre-Wedding Shoot - Chertsey, Surrey

I loved meeting Ben & Moya at their home which is right next to the river in the quietest spot possible, surrounded by meadows and wild flowers. Stunning. I also got to meet Poppy & Tallula (aka 'Dog Cat') which was fascinating. They were very interested in what we were up to and I loved how they wanted to be involved in the shoot. Tallula acts just like a dog, following you around and acting like she's going on the walk with you. They are both adorable.

Leonard Street Royal Wedding Street Party, Shoreditch, London

As part of the Sony World Photo Organisation's London Festival 26th April - 1st May 2011 I took part in the Portrait Workshop run by David Graham and based myself at the Leonard Street Royal Wedding Street Party. I really did have a ball and the mood all day was amazing. Huge thanks to Loriann at Big Box Media, Jon at The Book Club, Emma and her fab Team at High Roller, and finally and most importantly everyone who agreed to let me photograph them for the project. I am so grateful and was blessed with so many wonderful subjects.

I hope that I've done you all justice (click on the photo to watch the slideshow of the 80ish people who I managed to capture).

There were around 80 - 100 of us taking part in the Portrait and Documentary Projects and each of the delegates chose one photograph to be a part of the final exhibition which went 'LIVE' today at Somerset House. The exhibition will be open until 22nd May. My selected photograph is the one above which I am thrilled about as his partner will be attending Somerset House from September. I hope you both go in and see your photo in the flesh.

The other exhibitions include a wonderful Bruce Davidson selection of prints from his life's work (I actually got a bit tearful it was so beautiful), and of the course the Sony World Photograph Awards themselves. The cafe is pretty good too and it's a lovely peaceful haven just off the Strand.

Again, thanks to everyone on Leonard Street on Friday. It's a day I'll always remember with great fondness. x

Chris & Rosey's Wedding - Lulworth Castle, Dorset

It seems like ages ago that I was in sunny Doset to photograph Chris & Rosey's wedding at Lulworth Castle. I did a reccie the day before, starting at Poole Harbour and the gorgeous Hotel du Vin where Rosey and girls were getting ready, and ending at the stunning Castle which was very Spring-like - lots of little lambs frolicking about and a mass of daffodils. Absolutely beautiful.

On Saturday morning the girls visited the Aveda salon (I LOVE Aveda salons) which was bustling but very calm. It was really nice to be able to hang out with them all and it meant I learnt who was who. Lots of giggling and fun from them all and Rosey's hair was breathtaking. I then dropped in on the guys for a quick lemonade at the pub before heading to the Castle and the simply stunning Chapel within the grounds. Lots of merriment as guests arrived and were welcomed into the Chapel to beautiful sounds from Venetia on her harp.

Samuel & Abby were brilliant as they headed down the aisle followed by Rosey & her Father and finally the three girls. Father Dorricott is part of Rosey's family and married Rosey's Parents so it was really wonderful that he married Chris & Rosey. Readings from Patrick, bidding prayers by Liz, Jo & Tom as witnesses, Summer delivering the communion wine, and finally William on the organ for the entire service - he did an amazing job. All in all it was a very personal and elegant service, a delight to watch.

After some group photographs on the steps of the Castle everyone enjoyed the champagne reception while I took a few shots of just Rosey & Chris. The dining hall looked amazing with the most stunning display of flowers and some lovely touches on the tables, especially the champagne theme. Chris & Rosey entered to great applause and the meal went without a hitch with staff carrying hundreds of plates up from the crypt up a set of perilous steps. Very impressive. The speeches went down really well with Peter, Chris & Tom encouraging much laughter. I loved Chris & Rosey's reactions. Cake cutting and spectacular first dance followed. They really did have some smooth moves and the final flourish from Chris had everyone cheering like crazy.

A truly fabulous day filled with love and laughter with some wonderful memories for me. I liked how your families and friends all had as much fun as you two - everywhere I looked people were laughing. Huge congratulations & do keep in touch with all of your news. x

Family Photography at Home - A Christmas Example

I missed posting this session because it was crazy around Christmas 2010 but I think it's really interesting. Typically families only get together for christenings, weddings and funerals when the whole point of the event isn't to get nice group photos. Well... obviously at weddings it's a good opportunity except for the fact that the main players are dressed slightly differently so it's not really a very 'normal' scenario.

The only other time that familes are together is for key holidays with Christmas being the number one. But the problem with this is that typically it's only on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day and most photographers are lying in a huge heap having completed their Christmas orders (me included).

But this year I had a call from Penny up in Ayrshire who was flying down here to meet up with the Sussex gang. Her daughter was flying in with her family from Italy and so it was a perfect opportunity. Since they gave me loads of warning and didn't need the photos immediately it meant that I could accommodate them.

The issue with Winter portraits is ensuring that there is enough light - I sometimes work in venues where I don't need additional light, but it was a darkish day so I took along my lighting kit. It takes a while to set up and take down (up to 3 hours in total) and pretty much takes over the client's home but it does mean that you can control the light which is vital when there are lots of people in the shot. The actual shoot takes between 30 and 40 minutes depending on the number of shots. All in all it's a big job for only a few photos but the memory of all being together and in a relaxed and happy mood makes it really worth it.

I hope you agree.

And finally, I did tell Penny that the landscape in Winter isn't really great for outside portraits unless it snows of course... and we laughed since it's very rare for it to snow on Christmas Eve... Ha ha ha

So here are a few of the children mucking about with snowballs just before I started setting up my lights.

Coco (the 'Superstar') - Pet Photography in Kent & Sussex

It's funny what a bit of sausage does for one's ability to hold a dog's attention...

Coco came into the studio with her Mum & Dad and pretty much rocked it. I did Georgie & Brendan's wedding and remember laughing at the Best Man's speech when it got to the bit about a dog being an essential for Georgie (I heartily agree). Coco was actually arranged in the build up to the wedding and collected on their return from honeymoon. I was lucky enough to meet her as a little puppy when they came round to view their wedding photos. She was adorable then and is super sweet now. Such a gentle and fun spirit. I loved having her in.

I wanted to take a few slightly different shots with Coco as an integral part of the family so I was delighted when we managed to get these two shots. Isn't she just gorgeous?!

These are going to look amazing on the wall! Thanks so much for coming in - it was great to see you & to see how Coco has grown up. x

Children's Portrait Photography in Kent

I decided to do a reccie before these three came into the studio so I had lunch with Mum & Dad at their home a few weeks earlier. While I was there I also received an invite to their son's groovy party upstairs where we played musical statues. Even weeks later I am still known as the worst player they have ever come across which is a little disappointing as I like to think that I am quite unobtrusive. Oh dear...

Here are the results of our shoot with the youngest stealing the show with her wings on. I absolutely adore this series as it's so boisterous and fun.

And finally, here's a lovely peaceful one only seconds earlier. Simply beautiful.

Callum & Family - Family Portrait Photography in West Sussex

I need your help with this post please. Here is Callum and his family who are one of my favourite families to photograph. I first took photos of Callum when he was a baby and it's so fantastic to see him all grown up and still as photogenic as ever.

We had a real giggle with his George & the Dragon outfit along with sword, shield, bow and arrow. Obviously the ensemble wasn't quite finished though... Callum brought along his kung-fu panda which has rather a memorable tune (on no, it's in my head again!) "Everybody is kung-fu fighting...!"

And then after we'd done a few poses with just Callum I threw in Mum & Dad for a mix of serious and fun shots.

Phobe, Oscar & Daisy - Children's Photographer in East Sussex

Yee haa! When Phobe & Oscar came in dressed in their cowboy gear I was thrilled - they both look amazing in these shots. So cool and American.

Here's Phobe first with her gorgeous hair and fantastic shape - she's a photographer's dream because she poses so well.

And here is Oscar doing a fantastic pose which reminded me of Andy Warhol's 1963 'Elvis', 'Double Elvis', and 'Triple Elvis' taken from the 1960 film 'Flaming Star'. I love it.

And then lovely Daisy entered the frame and this one of all three of them is just fab. It did take a bit of editing (Dasiy was looking away originally) but I think it's worth it.

And finally, I just had to post this one of Oscar which I am a huge fan of - it's as close to perfection as far as I'm concerned (which is high praise from me as I'm very tough on myself).

Beatrice's Day Out - Family Portrait Photography in the South East

I do love it when I get to meet children of my wedding couples and Beatrice was no exception. She was just one of the funniest and interesting toddlers I've had in the studio. She is fascinated by everything and really likes to dive straight into things. I just love the shots of her playing with Mummy's beads and she was just so funny when she was doing this - she kept on (very sweetly) handing me a bangle which made actually getting a shot quite hard, but I wasn't complaining. I'm a sucker for gifts even if I have to give them straight back!

Luckily Emily had brought in a book to read and although Beatrice wasn't initially interested once the bunnies were lined up and listening that swung it...

And finally I tried a few including Ed and I am thrilled that we got this happy, smiley one. It's VERY Beatrice.

Deb, Harri & Fred - Family Photography Surrey & West Sussex

As everyone knows not everybody is naturally photogenic. So when someone like Harri comes into the studio I get terribly excited. I have to say that when Deb came in with Harri & Fred I was thrilled with their choice of outfits. They blended perfectly. I always suggest that everyone who is going to be involved in the shoot should lay out their clothes side by side on the bed, then stand back and squint. Anything that stands out should be swapped out until all of the clothing sits nicely together.

I just love the blacks and greys and this in turn works really well with Fred. Not that I'm suggesting that you start with the dog first! Fred, by the way, is the sweetest dog - a wonderfully gentle nature & he just looks so beautiful in the photos. It always helps when you bring a plastic pot of cooked chicken or sausages... A fellow photographer swears by raw liver which I'm sure works beautifully but I really don't want it anywhere near my cameras! Ewww

Anyway, I did a couple of shots of Harri on her own first & here's one I really like.

And then onto the family shot. I wanted to show that Harri is beginning to gain her independence but at the same time show that Deb was still there for support, hence the reason for asking Harri to turn away from Deb. I really like how these two have worked out. The one including Fred goes straight into my all time top 10 photos that I've ever taken. It means a great deal to me and I will be forever grateful to Deb & Harri for allowing me freedom to create this shot. [It really needs to be seen LARGE to take in the amazing detail - I may decide eventually to reproduce it as a massive 40 - 50 inch print... watch this space]

Jessie & Monty - Kids' Portrait Photography in Kent

Wow, these two were both an absolute joy to photograph. They both brought things with them that they really liked (Jessie her guitar, and Monty his amazing Star Wars collection) and wore clothing that worked well with their props. I like how they both were really calm and engrossed with their props too - it meant that I could get photos that were really revealing about their personalities.

I remember being a young girl and not being that keen on people actually seeing me if at all possible. I had a fringe that completely covered my eyes, so when I saw that Jessie hides behind her hair I really wanted to incorporate that and I love how this one came out. And I really like the little touch of the blue hair ribbon detail matched with blue nail polish. I hadn't photographed Jessie for about 4 years and it was wonderful to see how grown up and beautiful she has become.

And here's Monty in a pose that I wanted to look a little Han Solo-like. I adored Harrison Ford in Star Wars when I was a child. He was much cooler than Luke Skywalker. I think that Monty has nailed this pose in a big way. I certainly wouldn't underestimate his powers or The Force.

Luckily Jane bought CJ (and Lightning) in too so I managed this one of the three of them and it was good to try with a smile. I love this one.

And finally I threw in Mum & Dad (and Lightning) which was a massive challenge as the dogs were desperately keen to run around like crazy things. I think I was holding choccie biscuits for this one (my camera got slightly sticky) - can you tell from their faces?! I really wanted to get a 'cool' family shot as opposed to an 'all sat on the floor' number and this fits the bill for me. It's a little like the kind of shot you'd get from a family holiday if you asked a fellow holidaymaker to take it - relaxed and happy - but with the 'cool' factor that it's taken in a studio using low key lighting.

Well done all of you - I'm so impressed & thanks so much for bringing the woofs in too. x

Fuerteventura 2011

Just back from 2 weeks in Fuerteventura and it was great to see so many chilled out sufer dudes. Sadly for the first nine days it was horribly cloudy so I sunbathed in my PJs and alpine socks. Ha ha ha

Luckily the last few days were stunning so I did manage to shake off my pasty white skin very slightly. Lost of lovely sunsets over in El Cotillo and behind the villa. Nothing better than watching it go down over the hills from the jacuzzi.

And finally, as ever, my reading options. I enjoyed every book that I read for once although I think that I should have included a couple of really trashy numbers. Book of the holiday goes to Kathryn Stockett's The Help which was very funny & warm. Special mention to wonderful short story collection called An Elergy for Easterly by Petina Gappah. I'll be watching this author with interest.

And that's it really. Annual holiday done and it's back to work. Can't wait.

Postcard from Berlin

I spent a few days in Berlin last week and had a great time. There was lots to see and do and because my trip coincided with Fashion Week I met some fascinating fashion folk at my B&B, one of whom attended the Hugo Boss show which made me very envious indeed. The other was there to buy shoes for his retail group back home. I knew that there must have been people who did this but it was great fun to actually meet one.

Anyway here are some highlights:

1) I stayed in a superb B&B called Zimmer Mittendrin which was perfectly placed to get to everywhere and was so comfortable and relaxing. Sabine Knoll lives next door and is on hand to help you settle in - she really is wonderful and welcoming and her breakfasts are absolutely stunning. I can't recommend this place more highly.

2) The Berliner Philharmoniker - a long-held dream of mine to see this orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle conducting and I have to say that I was mesmerised. My Father would have loved it. The President of Croatia (Ivo Josipović) was there so there was a huge police presence since they found a grenade at their embassy on Monday. Arriving to the stunning concert hall (2nd row, 3rd in) to see a policeman with a machine gun standing on the roof really added to the atmostphere.

3) Sights-wise I took in The East End Gallery with the longest portion of the Wall still remaining (1st row, 1st in) and decorated with sligthly iffy art from artist around the World but interesting none-the-less. The Berliner Dom (1st row, 2nd in), the Neue Synagoge (4th row, 1st in), the Brandenburg Gate (3rd row, 2nd in), the Fernsehturm (TV tower - 4th row, 3rd in) are all easy to find and are all fantastic to see. I was really looking forward to going up into the dome at the Reichstag but sadly it was closed to all except pre-arranged groups and people who had a booked a table in the restaurant which I recommend as a good idea - you go straight in then and can simply buy a coffee. If I had checked their website first I could have got the lowdown... doh. So I took in the Sony Centre instead (3rd row, 1st in) which was fantastic. I also highly recommend just walking around and checking out the amazing architecture in the further out surburbs (especially north of Alexanderplatz) and between the Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden.

4) For shopping there are lost of amazing shopping streets and malls but I was on a strict 'no spending' regime so I stuck with simply walking down Friedrichstrasse which is very beautiful. I wimped out (surprise) and bought my 2011 wedding season shoes though. Anyone who reads this knows that I take each season's pair of shoes extremely seriously. Since I can be on my feet for sometimes 12 hours straight I need the most comfortable shoes in the World so the new ones are by Think!. They aren't sexy but they sure are comfortable. An interesting website too - one of their tag lines reads 'individual, comfortable, natural'... I like that.

5) For once I didn't visit a photography museum or gallery, sticking instead to dropping in on funky book and magazine shops which kept me amused for quite a while. A fabulous bookshop is Buchhandlung Walther Konig near the Berliner Dom and is a great browse. I found an hysterical magazine there called 'I Love You' which is well worth a look (it's a blog). It is really funny. And then I came across a shop called Issue and all it sells is magazines - and it sells A LOT of different types of magazines. It looks amazing and is super cool. The only photographic thing I stopped at was the Museum fur Fotografie / Helmut Newton Sammlung where I was hoping that they'd feature younger photographic artists alongside the work of Newton. No such luck. Not only was all of the Newton work on tour somewhere but the entire gallery was taken up with the work of his wife. Now I'm sure it's fine but really, 8 Euros not even to see Helmut Newton's work (which I don't even particularly like). There is also a shrine to Helmut Newton on the ground floor. I couldn't have run away any faster if I tried.

6) And finally, my museum trips included only two - the DDR Museum (2nd row, 1st & 4th - 4th row, 2nd & 4th) near the Dom which is a really fun museum showing you what it was like to live in East Berlin between 1945 and 1989. I was expecting to giggle a little at some of the items on display but to be honest all that happened is that I felt catapulted back to the 1970s and my childhood. Polyester clothing, lots of brown and orange, big hair, terrible architecture, plasticky toys, formica etc. etc. Even the Trabant felt like my Grandmother's Renault 5 with it's dashboard-mounted gear stick. As I looked around everyone else was laughing but I was feeling a clammy chill throughout especially when I saw the kitchen and sitting room. Brilliant all the same. The Gemaldegalerie is amazing and one of my highlights. I spent 2 hours there but I think 3 would have been better. It has 72 rooms and if you did the entire space it would be 2km. My feet hurt by the end... but it was worth it.

Beyond all of this I found the people warm and friendly and the city really buzzy & fun. Only one German (from Munich) openly mentioned terrible British food, the drizzly and grey skies of London, and the fact that we are pants at taking penalties. I kept my mouth firmly shut of course. I mean, what could I have said in reply? Ha ha ha he he he ho ho ho

The GORGEOUS Dylan - Pet Photography in East Sussex

I've been dying to post these photos!

As most of my readers know I am a huge dog fanatic... all animals really. I had been following Dylan's blog since the day he arrived with Susan & Kev (of course dogs have blogs - click here for Dylan's - it's really brilliant) but I'd never met him so I felt like I already knew him when he came bounding into the studio. The original plan had been to take some pictures on Brighton beach near where he lives but we just didn't get the timings right so instead he came up to me and was just the best poser ever.

He is a Welsh Terrier and just has the most amazing personality - so friendly and happy. It was only when I saw him in profile that I realised how wonderful he would look sat on a chair like this... it's like an old 1900s photograph & I love it.

And then we incorporated Susan & Kev and I feel so awful but I really wanted to create a more trendy & stylised family photo with one of them facing away from me. We tried both options but the one with Kev facing me worked best. I feel so mean! But it's worked so well and I know that if I had a photo of Fred & me then this is the sort of thing that I'd really love. Just my feet or the back of my head would suit me perfectly!

Evie & Family - Family Portrait Photography in Kent

This is Evie and her Mum & Dad. Evie is 14 months old and very spirited - I love just how busy toddlers are, always something to explore or do & always so much fun. Evie was happy & inquisitive throughout which meant we got some beautiful AND fun images from her session. I was keen with the three of them to take a relaxed all together shot that didn't look too posed but was still based on the ground. They rose the this challenge perfectly and I love how Evie is hanging onto Mum's necklace in this one. It's fab.

And her is a quiet moment from Evie where my assistant, Steph, clearly caught her eye and really intrigued her. It's just so beautiful and emotive. Well done Steph whatever you did!

And another 11-year old - this time William who is a natural in front of the lens. I like it when children and young people make suggestions as to what to do during their shoot - it always produces photographs that have more wellie. William was great at taking direction and throwing out ideas - perfect!

We tried a few with Mum & Dad too and I really like the seriousness of the family one. My intention was to have them all looking quite cool and subdued and I just love the feel of this.

And William plus Dad is a killer - full of love and fun.

And finally, just William looking cool as you like. We did lots using low ley light too but I really like the casualness of this one.

Em - Children's Portrait Photography in the South East

Here is the beautiful Em who took part in my 11-years old project. What I really like about 11-year olds is that they are quite wise in a funny way. I always learn lots from them and they are really starting to be determined about their likes and dislikes so they have opinions. I've know Em for quite some time and it's been brilliant to see her grow up into such a lovely young person.

What was even better about this shoot is that Em's Mum was on hand to help with lighting and reflectors. She's an artist so knew exactly what do to - it makes such a difference. And since then I've been asking clients to do the same and it's been brilliant to have ready and able assistants!

Anyway, here's one from the session - we did loads of serious ones but it was this one that captured Em best. Hope you like it.

Olly, Ed & Eliza - Children's Portrait Photography in West Sussex

I thought I'd launch 2011 with some photos of one of the two families who I have photographed more than any other - meet Olly, Ed & Eliza who smashed it when they came in last month. I was running a little behind so we were against the clock a little. Like true professionals all three simply got into position and looked at me - ready for their shot. Brilliant!

I really like this one of Olly as it shows a really interesting intensity. He's a natural in front of the camera and is so willing to mess about and experiment a little.

Here is Ed trying to take directions from a mad cricket fan (me) who knows nothing about what the actual strokes are called. I think he was laughing inside just a little... (lol) I really like how the light falls on his face in this one. Looks like I learned a little from my trip to the Rijksmuseum this year.

And finally this is Eliza just being herself in a jumper that I'd quite like myself. I haven't got a pair of Uggs at the moment but doesn't this shot make you want to run out and buy a pair? Lovely & snuggly. I tried taking a few of Eliza not smiling but it's very silly of me really - her smile is simply terrific.

The three of them took an utterly brilliant group shot - the first was serious & the second made me smile. I had to choose this one really...

Kittens Hamish & Dotty - Cat Photography in West Sussex

Ok, so now I know to ask people to bring a container like a basket, vintage trunk or old tin bath if they are bringing kittens or puppies into the studio. Anything to keep them in one place!

Hamish & Dotty are new addtions to Annette & Graham's home and are Persians. I'd never really see a Persian cat up close until I met Annette's & I can't actually believe that there are cats that look like a cross between a teddy bear and Gizmo in Gremlins (one of my all time favourite film characters). They are completely adorable and as kittens I can't even begin to explain how sweet they are. In fact, I almost didn't bother taking their photo I was so busy holding them.

They made sure that they visited every single square centimetre of the studio and ended up covered in bits of dust which was hysterical. Trying to get them to stay put in one spot was ridiculously hard but I managed this one of Hamish being distracted by Annette & her dangly toy, and of Dotty in Graham's hands. [I know that I shouldn't have favorites but Hamish is a born poser & a natural in front of the lens - how cute is his face?!]

Miles & Owen - Children's Portrait Photographer in West Sussex (Crawley & East Grinstead)

Meet Miles & Owen whose Mum & Dad's wedding I covered in 2006. I do love seeing wedding clients' children and particularly who they look like. I think that Miles has a lot of Camilla in him while Owen is a real Jamie - although I may have that wrong..?

The two boys were feeling slightly coldy and I really felt for them, but I think that they did brilliantly. This shot of the two of them hugging was worth the trip on it's own. It's so like the two of them and since Owen was teetering between tears and laughter for these 3 minutes I think we lucked out!

Hollie - Children's Portrait Photographer in West Sussex

You can't help but be cheered when Hollie is around - she has the most wonderful personality. Very open and fun with a real sense of adventure, although I'm pretty sure that her Mum & Dad do worry about that last one! She was fascinated with my camera case and I thought that at one point I might have to sit for my very own portrait.

Once we'd set up her toys and teapot (it sings - fab) Hollie duly obliged for this really adorable shot.

And of the family shots I love Hollie expression in this one (sorry to Mum & Dad that they don't appear in full... please don't take offence. I am just a bit bogged down with editing at the moment & I like that Hollie is the star of the show!)

I am delighted to be working with Carolyn & David for their wedding next year and can't wait to see how much Hollie will have grown. It's going to be a fantastic day - I'm really looking forward to it. [Thanks Jon for the introduction - I am so grateful & will see you next year]

Martin, Paul & Berkeley + Gorgeous Chairs - Portrait Photography in West Sussex

I already posted a funny series of Berkeley but I couldn't resist a couple more now that I have finished editing. I love it when people really come prepared for their shoot and Martin & Paul were fantastic and brought in two fabulous chairs. I had planned a shot similar in style to a recent shot Michael Douglas and Shia LaBoeuf from the poster for Wall Street - Money Never Sleeps so a chair was vital. The guys rocked it and I'm saving the final shot for a special occassion.

But in the meantime here are some scene setters of the guys plus their adorable dog, Berkeley. I love how he matches the chair in colour and tone. It even has a few horse hairs coming out of the underside of the seat which looks like Berkeley's hair. Brilliant.

Emma & Andrew and Introducing Allegra - Family Portrait Photography in Crawley (West Sussex)

I was so excited when Emma-Jane & Andrew came in with Allegra because the last time I had seen them was when I delivered their wedding album. There is nothing I enjoy more than photographing babies and children of my wedding clients. It means that they are totally used to the way that I work and are happy to try out new ideas.

With the family shot I wanted to move away from the 'everyone sat on the floor' option and thought that this rather old-fashioned pose would look cool because of the contemporary clothing (plus I LOVED Emma's boots so wanted them to be very visible). I really like it's elegance.

And here's a gorgeous one of Andrew & Allegra - we did some with Andrew's face lit but I actually prefer this one where his face is in relative darkness compared to Allegra's well-lit face. Andrew is off to Afghanistan with the Army and I love the strength of this shot. It's very emotional.

And finally the one of Allegra propped up in the chair is my favourite from the whole shoot because of the look on her face. Us three rushing around like crazy people with her looking unimpressed by our idiotic behaviour.

You guys have a very beautiful daughter and all the best for your tour. Much love for Christmas. xx

Jo & Charlie + Milly - Couple & Pet Photography, East Grinstead (West Sussex)

Jo & Charlie brought their gorgeous new puppy, Milly, in to see me and we just about managed to keep her still for a few seconds to grab a couple of shots (I LOVE her pink scarf).

In case you are wondering what breed Milly is, she's a Patterpoo, which is a Patterdale Terrier crossed with a Toy Poodle. I wanted one pretty much immediately!

You are not going to believe this but below is a photo of Emma Duggan...

I was so excited when Emma contacted me because it's always been a dream of mine to photograph lots of Emma Duggans. I know that there are lots of interesting Emma Duggans in the UK including:

A chef (who is making great waves)
A funeral director
A museum conservationist (who I think studied a similar degree to mine - I did Archaeology BA Hons at Newcastle)
A hat maker & all round creative genius
A teacher (who actually teaches my Brother's godson in London)

Initially these are my key 'would like to photograph' Emma Duggans so please do contact me to arrange a meeting. I really would love to hear from as many as possible in 2011.

Anyway, back to this Emma Duggan, I loved working with her and Katie who kept me on my creative toes plus were fabulous in terms of outfits and make-up. Emma has since taken up photography as a serious hobby but she is very creative so it doesn't surprise me at all.

Katie was less keen to be in front of the camera but I made the poor girl and I think she did brilliantly.

It was a really fun session you two and huge thanks for coming along. What a hoot!

Simon & Jackie - Couple Photography, East Grinstead (West Sussex)

You really HAVE to check out The Best DJ in Town if you ever need a DJ for your event. I have worked with Simon on many occassions and he is the only DJ service that I recommend to clients. He is really a cut above the competition - he is totally reliable, dresses smartly, and is a pleasure to work with. I've seen him with clients and they all just love him.

You know those DJs who decide to take over your event with incessant chat in a weird DJ voice, or who play music that only they like (eg. rap or rave music when the average age of guests is 60), or who tell crude jokes etc. etc. Well Simon is the total opposite. I've seen him in action - he watches people to see how they respond to particular songs and then works his magic to keep everyone on the dance floor. He is totally brilliant. A genius. Do be aware that he gets booked up way in advance of most DJs so do ring him as early as possible.

Anyway, we updated his headshot and Jackie came along too so I grabbed them both. They are both very smiley happy people so I'm not sure that asking them not to smile was a good idea but I really like the results. Of course Simon can't not smile for long and obviously his headshot needed to look friendly so here it is. Hope you like it!

Aren't these two just adorable?! Finn was fantastic with his guitar and having seen his Dad in action it's amazing how alike they both are when they play. And Maisie brought her wonderful cake mixer and cake stand but it's this very cute one of her and her teddy that caught my eye.

This one of the two of them laughing is so brilliant - I was being particularly silly at the time I seem to remember!

Jackie & Jack - Family, Teenage & Pet Portrait Photography, East Grinstead (West Sussex)

This was a very special shoot because it involved two of my favourite people - Jackie and her son Jack - and they brought their wonderful doggies with them. Jackie had Betty who is just the most sweet dog and the only other girl in a home full of boys (Dad, 3 sons and Rollo). Betty clearly got straight into her, 'I'm ready for my close-up' mode and I just love this one of the two of them. It's just the kind of shot that I'd like of me and my dog, Fred.

Jack brough Rollo who was totally fine until he had to stand on the paper and then he acted as though the paper was going to melt his feet... Jack had major problems getting him settled so I am thrilled that we got this shot!

And finally just a quickie using low key lighting. Four years ago I entered a shot that I had taken of Jack into the National Portrait Gallery's Photographic Portrait Prize sponsored by Taylor Wessing so I thought it would be nice to update this shot. Jack is very good in front of the camera - a natural, and a pleasure to hang out with.

Alex as 'Doctor Who' - Children's Portrait Photographer, East Grinstead (West Sussex)

Alex walked in my studio and simply changed into his Doctor Who gear (the David Tennant look) and posed for me with his sonic screwdriver. I asked him to put his hands into his pockets and also asked him to stop smiling (sorry Mums!) because I could see that it would make a fantastic shot. He duly obliged and I took one of my all time favourite shots.

It's rare when everything somes together like that and you can't really plan for it as it really depends on everyone's mood on the day of the shoot. I knew the moment I pressed my shutter that I'd got a cracker and I was delighted that Alex loves the shot. He does look incredibly cool.

Royal Wedding Dress 2011 - Phillipa Lepley / Jenny Packham / Pronovias - Who Will Kate Choose?

I was so pleased to hear the news that William and Kate Middleton have announced their plans to marry next year. I've been thinking wedding dresses ever since... Everyone seems to think Phillipa Lepley who set up her shop in Fulham in 1990. When I first moved to London to work in 1991 I used to walk past her shop every day and thought to myself that she would be the person who I would choose to make my own wedding dress. Oh dear, I shouldn't have planned that hard!

Since I stated photographing weddings five years ago I have seen many beautiful dresses and have lots of favourites but my absolute top two are Jenny Packham & Pronovias. I've photographed eight Jenny Packham dresses now and what I love is that they are all so different and totally suit each bride. Pronovias are classic and beautifully elegant - you can spot one a mile off. I hope that Kate Middleton chooses British, whichever one she opts for & luckily her figure is so perfect she's going to look stunning whatever she wears.

I think that the date will be announced today and am desperately hoping that it's not on the same day as any of my booked weddings. Not that I would mind as I'm sure that the highlights will be shown for days afterwards. But I wouldn't want any of my couple's big day to be overshadowed. Fingers crossed.

Stephanie & Sebastian - Family Portrait Photography, East Grinstead (West Sussex)

I loved seeing Stephanie & Sebastian again. The last time was four years ago when Sebastian was only 16 months and had a wonderful way with me by saying 'ooh' every time I took his photo. And Stephanie was fantastic fun, trying on a selection of crazy hats for me. She's so grown up now and I just love this jumping shot - it expresses perfectly the excitement of Christmas.

And here's a quieter shot with Pooh Bear who has been Stephanie's companion since she was born. It reminded me of talking to my toys when I was little - they kept my secrets and didn't answer back!

This is Sebastian looking very brooding and wonderful. I LOVE this shot. I really like it that children can be laughing and silly one minute and then utterly serious the next... before bursting into fits of giggles again. I should remember to do more of that myself.

And here he is in a lighter mood on his amazing bicycle without pedals. It looked impossible, but he gets around on it just fine.

Anna & Ingrid aka Judo Queens - Portrait Photography (East Grinstead, West Sussex)

So I've learned some new tricks today with the help of the wonderful Mark Lambert and a new piece of software to me called Vertus Fluid Mask. I had some real problems with two of my recent photos - one of Rupert and his giraffes (see below) - and the other below of Anna & Ingrid demonstrating some of their cool judo moves.

I usually contract any more difficult jobs out to a professional retoucher but she's been far too busy this year. There are loads of retouchers willing to work for next to nothing but I am quite picky quality-wise so thought it best to actually learn how to do it myself. I am happy with 99% of my workflow but the moment I get a tricky background it does tend to send me into a mini panic!

Not only did I have to combine two photos but I also had some real differences in exposure between the two girls. There was a major drop off in light behind Ingrid and there was a bit of hair movement from both girls. Anyway, hope you think it all looks pretty smart now, and big thanks to Mark for reminding me all about masking.

Oh, I do love it when a plan comes together. Here is the adorable Rupert and his wonderful collection of giraffes. I had this photo in my mind but to actually have Rupert looking directly at me and the giraffes all looking pretty smart too... well... how totally fab!

And here are a couple with Rupert in his spectacular frog sleeping gear. I love this one of him looking up at Mum - so adorable.

Rupert has gorgeous hair so we mussed it up a bit for this one. He took it in his stride and even grinned to give it the full cute factor.

Amy & Andrew's Wedding - Leeds Castle, Maidstone & The Great Barn Rolvenden, Cranbrook (Kent)

When Gill (Amy's Mum) contacted me last year to talk about Amy & Andrew's wedding I took an instant shine to her. The beauty of Skype means that I can now 'meet' couples who live and work overseas. I had a great meeting with Amy & Andrew in Sydney and just loved their wedding plans - a Friday wedding at St Nicholas Church in Leeds Village followed by a reception at Leeds Castle, and then on the Saturday a black tie evening reception, hog roast and ceilild at The Great Barn Rolvenden (Cranbrook, Kent). What's not to like?!

I decided to visit the Castle a few days before their big day to get reaquainted with the building and surroundings & I'm so pleased that I did. I had quite forgotten how much I love this place. Not only is it the prettiest venue, with the most amazing history, but it also has the most helpful and happy staff that I've ever come across. Big thanks to everyone from the ground staff, to Mick Yates and all of the amazing stewards, to the lovely gatekeeper, and finally to Katie & Leon who looked after me so beautifully on the day (ensuring that I had a quiet room to chill in plus making sure that I was fed... yum!) It's quite astonishing that a venue of this size has so many wonderful people working there, all of whom will gladly help - I visit so many venues where the smallest request can sometimes be met with a raised eyebrow or even a gallic shrug. Not the case at Leeds Castle - plus it's a great day out!

I then went to the George Inn in Leeds Village to meet up with Amy & Andrew for the very first time and luckily Rev Norman Dabbs & his wife Jenny were there from St Nicholas and it was such a treat to meet the vicar before the day. Sadly for St Nicholas this is his last year there - I'm sure that he will be missed.

Onto Friday and I arrived in time to catch Amy's final preparations and to meet Helena & Jo, her gorgeous bridesmaids. I arrived at the Church and met a very smart Andrew & just managed a shot of him with Mike & David. Amy entered with John looking absolutely stunning and the big grins exchanged between her and Andrew was fabulous. The service went without a hitch with beautiful readings from Sue & Edward and after signing the Register Amy & Andrew walked out of the Church with huge smiles and their confetti shots are classic.

At Leeds Castle everyone enjoyed drinks and I manged to get the groups and Amy & Andrew's portraits done fairly smoothly. As I looked down on the large group from the Turret Room I suddenly noticed that Ross was missing. Now, how on earth, out of 50 people I actually noticed is quite beyond me but I'm glad we waited as it would have been a shame to come all the way over from NZ not to actually be in the group photo! [I know that people were surprised that I knew everyone's names in the immediate families. There's a lot to be said for memorising them the day before... it's far more personal & I like seeing everyone's face when I call them by name when we haven't even been introduced!]

The meal in the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall was quite simply fabulous. Everyone loved sitting in this amazing room and the atmosphere was brilliant. Speeches by John, Ross, Amy, Andrew, and finally Mike had everyone rolling about - including me - and Mike's very funny & touching stories actually made me cry (I'm such a wimp!) I left the chatting in full swing and walked back to my car reflecting on what a real priviledge it is to photograph at such a perfect venue with such a great bunch of people.

The next day I arrived at The Great Barn to find everyone in great sprirts and looking very dapper in black tie. Amy & Andrew finally had the opportunity of good chats with everyone over Pimms & canapes organised by the wonderful Matt at Bite Me Catering (who introduced me to Gill - thanks Matt!) who provided a stunning hog roast and lots of other delicious food. This time I took Naomi along with me to help out and it was great fun to have someone to chat to during the meal. After the meal Amy & Andrew gave a mini-speech before hitting the dance floor for their 1st dance. And then things really kicked off when the ceilidh band started up. I have never seen a pregnant woman move quite so fast down a line than Angela with David - well done that girl!

So every now and again you come across someone who is breathtakingly gorgeous and Sarah is definitely one of those people. She'll be so embarrassed that I wrote that! Anyway, Sarah and Mike came in to see me and I really wanted a 'cool' couple photo and they duly obliged. I just the casualness of the pose.

I snuck out of the house this evening with my camera and managed to dodge Fred who loves having his photo taken & hates not being the centre of attention.

Here are lovely gifts from Claire & Mike (+ sweet peas from Gill which lasted longer than the choccies but not long enough for me to take this photo). I love that Claire & Mike are organic about most things and chose organic food and wine (locally sourced where possible) for their wedding day. I knew that I could get away with eating the chocolates and then re-attaching the band (ha ha ha), but I thought you might notice the wine so I held off on that.

I really am so blessed with my clients - I keep on saying that I'll stop putting photos up of all of the lovely gifts so as not to embarrass people into giving me anything. Amy & Dave's Wedding - Lovekyn Chapel, Kingston & Weston Green, Thames Ditton (Surrey)

Who in their right mind isn't going to want to work at the Lovekyn Chapel? The moment Amy contacted me last year I loved this venue name (so sweet) & couldn't wait to meet them to hear all about their plans. And then the ten months since I last saw them flew by and I found myself panicking about the Kingston one-way system! Luckily a run through on the Thursday eased my nerves - they had everything planned perfectly and it was a simple journey from Kelly's to the Lovekyn Chapel and then onto Weston Green. Piece of cake.

At Kelly's I found everyone very organised and calm and all of the girls right on time. Amy looked stunning in her gorgeous embroidered dress - it suited her beautifully. Carol, Kelly & Louise toned in perfectly. On to the Chapel to find Dave looking relaxed with his Parents, JJ & Nick. Everyone looked very colourful as they arrived and although the weather had been a little dismal in the morning there were signs of sun poking through every now and again. Amy arrived and walked up the aisle with Carol and the smiles that Amy & Dave greeted each other with were fantastic. A very personal and touching ceremony with a reading from Liz, piano playing from Kelly & cello by Juliet And when the lovely Surrey Registrars announced that they were husband and wife everyone rang their little silver bells with great gusto. Brilliant!

A few photos outside (in full sun now) before everyone headed down to Weston Green. I'm afraid I stole Amy & Dave for some photos on the golf course which had some fabuolous trees... as long as the sun held out. And it did. Result! They were fantastic and I think that the results are magical. They had a vision very early on about where to have their photos taken and they were spot on. I loved it although I'm not sure Amy's feet will fogive me in a hurry, not to the mention the monstrous horsefly siege underneath her dress... poor girl.

They made their grand entrance to their beautifully-decorated marquee to be met by Marie with confetti. A delicious BBQ followed by speeches from Carol, Dave, JJ & Nick. Quite the funniest reactions from Amy & Dave as Nick regaled everyone with the most embarrassing stories he could possibly have mentioned. Just the way I like it... [I'm so mean!]

First dance and then lots of crazy dancing especially from the smaller wedding guests who really did go for it. A great swing band who got into the spirit of things and as I walked back over the Green to my car I looked around to see/hear the party in full swing and a memory of a day full of smiles.

Thanks for looking after me, welcoming me into your day so wonderfully, the delicious food and copious amounts of lemonade. I had a thoroughly good time and hope Wales was fab. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow! xx [P.S. Thanks so much for wonderful flowers. Emma x]

NPG Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2010

I've just heard from the NPG (National Portrait Gallery) that my print wasn't selected for exhibition but I did make it through to Day 2 which is the point at which the judges make their final selections for the exhibition.

It's one better than my last entry so I am thrilled. Makes me even more determined next time. [Competition was pretty stiff - nearly 6,000 images]

Wedding Gift List / Registry

Confetti has just closed its five retail shops and is no longer selling online. Under the Consumer Credit Act you can claim through your credit card company on purchases over £100 (debit cards are not protected).

Buy your wedding insurance as soon as you have booked your venue and ask whether or not they cover the failure of a wedding gift list / registry. They cover all other supplier failure because you are booking and paying for them, but it will be your guests out of pocket and not you so it's a grey area. Last year Marks & Spencer said that they would cover the failure of Wrapit.com by asking guests to claim on the couple's insurance policy. How very nice of them.

This is not the first and it certainly won't be the last internet wedding service to fail:

The Gift Registry went into administration in October 2004 after suffering losses of more than £300,000, leaving more than 350 couples without their gifts and many wedding guests out of pocket. In September 2005 Wedding List Direct went into administration. The White House collapsed in November 2005 owing £120,000 in presents. Five newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky was a victim of this one. And in August 2008 Wrapit.com collapsed with debts of £7m (that seems a ridiculously high figure but it's true) and left thousands of couples without gifts. It was discovered that Wrapit were issuing 'refunds' on their card processing units to pay suppliers & salaries as well as taking at least £872k from wedding guests when they were already insolvent. The two directors were banned from directorships for 8 and 7 years. One of the directors then went on to help set up pleaseandthankyou.co.uk much to the disgust of Wrapit's customers.

The reason that these gift registries attract people is that they offer products from many different shops - charging a few pounds more per item. And then when the company doesn't have first class systems in place things can start to go wrong. Generally gift companies don't make money in the first couple of years (Wrapit never made a profit and had been trading for 7 years) and you may find that your guests' money is going towards start-up costs, salaries, or other operating costs. If the bank stop providing finance there is no money left to actually buy the gifts that have been ordered and paid for.

Credit insurance (bought by companies insuring against the failure of a debtor) puts a high premium on the 'gift' sector for a reason. And because people sign up for their gift list so far in advance companies can take guests' money and not source the items for weeks or months in advance. If things start to go wrong they can keep quiet for a long time. Any money left in the business at the date of insolvency goes first to the banks and insolvency practitioners. Couples and their guests are unlikely to see a penny back.

It's not uncommon to hear of couples losing out on £5,000 to £10,000 worth of gifts if their wedding list / registry provider goes under so my advice is to choose a well-established supplier like John Lewis (est. 1864) who offer a great selection at really good prices. Their motto 'never knowingly undersold' means that if you find the same item cheaper elsewhere they will refund the difference. Whenever I speak to people who have never visited the store and then they go they are blown away by how amazing the selection is and how lovely the staff are. I used to joke as a teenager that the only reason to get married was for a gift list at John Lewis... Do you think that's why I am still single? lol

What Do People Want From A Portrait Shoot?

If you've never commissioned a portrait of you or your family it's a minefield out there...

Which photographer do you choose?
Home, on location outside, or a studio shoot?
What do you wear? What happens if it rains?
What do you want as a final product - prints, canvases, an album, a nice frame?
How much are you going to budget for everything and surely a holiday, a car, or the school fees are more important?

There is a lot of choice right now with photographers popping up everywhere, all the time. I always say two things to my potential clients - one, LOVE the photographer's style (really have a close look at their website for previous examples - do you like the actual photographs?), and two, LIKE them... after all, you might be having them in your home, working with your children. They really should be someone that you are 100% comfortable with.

When you look at photographs of children and families are they taken in a studio, inside a lovely (clean and tidy!) set designed home (as in Junior Magazine or Homes & Gardens), or are they out and about on a walk with the dogs with lots of seasonal colours in evidence? Cut out your favourites and meet the photographer before you even commission them & show them what you like. I find it really hard turning up to a house having never even met the family. It puts me on the back foot. I'm not saying that I can't do it but I far prefer a cup of coffee with at least the Mum before I am even commissioned. It means that we can agree to a plan that will produce images that are really wanted. And if you don't feel that I'm the right person then that's fine too... far better to opt out at this stage.

It's during this meeting that clothing, make-up, hair etc. can be discussed and a shoot date can be agreed. Oh yes, the British weather. It's the hardest thing about my job. I always have a back-up plan and this can be agreed during the initial meeting.

And at this initial meeting you can discuss what you'd like as a final product. Do you have lots of bare walls looking for large canvases or frames? Would you just like lots of prints as presents to friends and family? Or would you like an album in the style of a magazine spread that marks where you and your family are right now - this can include details of your house and garden, pets, a family walk and some interior shots of you all too using window light (very flattering)? Knowing what you'd like in advance helps me during the actual session as I can tailor what I do to what you'd like.

And finally, your budget. If you can't tell the difference between someone charging £50 and £500 then hire the £50 photographer! Studios are usually a little cheaper because they can do more sessions per day. I've been doing portraits for 6 years now and I've worked with hundreds of families. I have now just launched a brand new easy to understand price guide based on my experience of what people really want.

Do bear in mind that the average quality studio spend per customer is £600 and my average is more than this. However, some of my clients know exactly what they want and spend £295 on a single frame (20x16") or £295 on a canvas (20x16") while others buy a selection of frames and canvases and some prints for family and friends. Here are some examples from one shoot - a newborn, his big brother and sister, and Mum & Dad. I travelled to London and spent half a day with the family (newborns take the longest of any shoot) which produced 96 final images. I've incorporated 8 final shots in these examples - x 2 3-image frames (£379 x 2 = £758) and x 2 20x16" frames (£295 x 2 = £590) to make a total of £1,348. The entire job took just over 3 days from start to finish. The frames are all bespoke, using museum quality mount board, and made by my local framer.

The only question that I really can't guide you on is whether a holiday, a car, or the school fees are more important. I have always gone for quality over quantity and I like nice things. Have a look at Emma Duggan Photography on Facebook and you'll see what I mean by that. I buy photographic art and have spent £thousands on prints and framing... and my family aren't even in the photographs. I dread to think what would happen if my favourite photographer took photos of my dog, Fred... I'd have to hide my credit card that's for sure! Lol

Family Portrait Photography + Dogs, West Sussex

I always struggle when someones tries to take a photograph of me but put me with my dog, Fred, and I'm fine. I see him as a prop really. All I care about then is that Fred looks good in the photograph and I think that's how parents feel about their own children and often ask me only to photograph the kids. It's the same with family pets - once you put a dog in the shot everyone relaxes... it's amazing.

So here are a couple of recent doggie shots or Martina and her family with their two Labradors, and one of Julie & Dave with the very beautiful Lily & Bentley.

Julie & Dave asked me not to include them so I just love this one of the two dogs looking up at them with such enormous love. Perfect... just what I was after.

Claire & Michael's Wedding - St Nicholas, Pyrford & Wisley RHS, Surrey

I love photographing gardens with lots of lovely flowers and plants so when Claire & Mike came to see me and told me that they were having their reception at Wisley RHS I got pretty excited. Of course it's massive and you are very spoilt for choice so I was a little like a child in a sweetie shop! A trip around the gardens a couple of days before was a definite must and a very relaxing way to spend an hour or two.

I snuck an early visit to St Nicholas to admire Claire's Mum's flowers which were totally stunning and I burst out laughing when I saw the two sheep on the font (not real ones obviously). Claire has a thing about sheep (or 'aliens' as they are better known by the family). There were brilliant. On the way to Claire's Parent's house I dropped in on Mike and James who were taking things nice and easy. Claire and the girls were being pampered - lots of laughing - while Jamie & Chloe played with a multitude of cool toys downstairs.

Meanwhile the lovely Lucy was at the Church taking photos of the guys and Mike's family and everyone arriving to be greeted by bright sunshine. Hurrah! I left just before Claire set off and her and her Father arrived at the church in a fab Armstrong Siddeley with Simon & Jackie up front. The service was so sweet in the beautiful St Nicholas Church which is straight out of a Jane Austin novel & it was extra special because Rev Charles Gibson officiated. Having signed the Register the two of them walked down the aisle and out into bright sunshine. As people congratulated them suddenly a bright yellow chicken wearing a Woking Town (say no more) shirt approached and hugged Claire and Mike with great gusto. And so Jim kept his promise that if ever Claire married he would dress up as a bird and wear a Woking Town FC shirt. Hysterical.

Off to nearby Wisley RHS where they put on two wonderful guided tours of the gardens and guests drank and ate in the beautiful surroundings. I took Claire & Mike off for a mini-tour of the gardens and we kept bumping into the tours which was very funny (for me anyway!) I felt very guilty making Claire walk so far wearing her gorgeous Jimmy Choos but she handled it all brilliantly.

We managed the everyone shot with me hanging out of a window and I really thought that getting 160 people in the shot would take an age but I was stunned when everyone got into position within 3 minutes - World record I think! Everyone then took their seats for a delicious meal followed by speeches (and singing) from Len, Mike and Gareth who I think was very kind to Mike. Cake cutting and then first dance before everyone hit the dancefloor and got on down to some cool sounds from Famous Five.

Huge thanks to you all for being so accommodating and lovely to me all day and for the delcious food. A 'big up' to Daniel and all of the amazing staff at Wisley RHS who were truly wonderful and made working there a real pleasure. Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday. x

Family Portrait on Location - Sally, John & Ben

Meet the fabulous Ben who I met for the first time two weeks ago when I visited him and his Parents at home. I photographed Sally & John's wedding a while back so it was fantastic to meet Ben and see how they all fitted into their gorgeous home together. Ben was fascinated by my cameras so it was a challenge to photograph him but once I started behaving like a loony he was fine as can be seen from the photo below.

When I say, 'behave like a loony' I mean I resort to me very silly running up and down the stairs and then running into the room in order to get a smile. I'm not sure who thought I was madder - Sally & John or Ben - but at least it worked as I just love this family shot. It's so relaxed and happy - just what I was after.

Rosa - Part II

I enjoyed photographing Rosa so much that I asked her Mum to bring her back in for a mini-session and we had so much fun again.

Rosa just has a way in front of the camera that's very rare. The camera really does just love her. That last one is reminiscent of a Snowdon photograph and it's one that both Rosa's Mum and I really like.

Richard's New Publicity Photographs

Last month I met up with Richard to update his publicity photographs & I was very nervous since Richard is a highly accomplished photographer and a member of the RPS (Royal Photographic Society). He takes really beautiful and classic portraits of children on location and I know from seeing his work that he clearly has a great rapport with his subjects. No pressure then!

It was a balmy afternoon so what better way to start than with an iced coffee - delicious. We shot in a few locations and I really like the different feel of each one. Hope you like them, Richard.

Prom Photography - Naomi's Prom 2010

Prom season has once again gone in a flash of gorgeous hair, make-up, dresses, shoes, jewellery, nails etc. and I was delighted to be able to photograph Naomi and her friends just before their prom at the Ardingly Showground last month.

Wow, they looked so amazing and I felt slightly envious of their youthfulness, especially as we climbed the steep steps to the church to catch the amazing sunlight just before it vanished behind the hills. I loved working with these four girls and it was an added bonus to be able to photograph 3 generations of Naomi's family as well. Thanks to Mum & Nan (especially for spotting that nice light) - it really was a pleasure to meet you both.

To Naomi I wish the very best of luck with the next two years at college and thank you for being such fun to hang out with during the 2009-10 academic year. You have impressed me hugely with your charm and all round loveliness - you deserve to have great success at both work and home. Poppy & Max

Every now and again I photograph a baby who just gives it the big grin right on cue and Poppy was definitely one of those babies. She was a total sweatheart and Max was so cute and cool just sitting there with her. Thanks Max. But I thought I'd better also point out that it's not always plain sailing and the hat was just a step too far. I love how children tear hats off because they REALLY don't want them anywhere near their head. My little sister Vic used to do the same thing - I'll never forget us trying to put a yellow plastic hat with eyes on her for a photo and she went crazy. Sorry to embarrass you... but it WAS funny.

Fred & Thank Yous

I was outside yesterday photographing lovely thank you gifts from Tim & Irene and Olivia & Jonathan when as per usual Fred decided that he would stand right in front of me until I took his photo. He's not that keen on me paying attention to anyone or anything other than him which is terribly funny. But if I give him a great big hug and a kiss he goes all teenager on me, 'oh, Mum, get off me... it's embarrassing'.

Jonathan & Olivia's Wedding - Powder Mills, Battle, East Sussex

Having spent some time with Olivia & Jonathan at Battle Abbey just a couple of weeks before their wedding day it made my arrival in sunny Battle very warm and cosy.

I was looked after beautifully by the team at Jempsons the bakery on the High Street who have three rooms behind the cafe. Arriving a day early was a bit of a treat until I decided to finally acknowledge that there was a World Cup on and made the mistake of watching England play... dismal. Luckily the Hagen Dazs ice cream made up for their performance just a little!

I woke up early on Saturday in order to go and say 'hello' to the guys at Jonathan's Parents' home where I also met Geoffrey & Zippy (J & O's gorgeous cats). I then headed on to Powder Mills where the girls were all busily preparing and didn't stay too long before making my way to the lovely Catholic Church in Battle called Our Lady Immaculate & St Michael and Father Tony White who was most accommodating and really did a fabulous address.

Everyone arrived in great spirits and Olivia turned up in a very sweet VW Beetle to be met by the girls before going down the aisle with a lovely beaming smile. Lots and lots of smiles from the two of them throughout the service which was filled with joy from start to finish. Out into sunshine and confetti before heading off to Powdermills where it proceeded to rain, then bright sunshine and then overcast in two cycles and all within 30 minutes... very challenging as I switched from flash to no flash, backlighting to front lighting, inside to outside etc. It was a very crazy reception weather-wise but it's lead to a lot of really fun pictures and I think that everyone handled the groups brilliantly. I felt so guilty asking people to stand out in the rain knowing that it would probably last only seconds - they were extremely good sports!

Into the meal (delicious - thank you so much) and afterwards some cracking speeches from Maureen, Jonathan & Luke that had everyone roaring with laughter. Finally a lot of dancing, cake cutting, polaroid photo booth + parasols, sparklers (which I missed for some reason?) and general good cheer before I headed back to Jempsons for a well earned hot chocolate and cheese from the amazing cheese buffet. I loved Olivia's English country tea party theme with all of the antique crockery and in season flowers and these combined with all of her little flourishes were evident everywhere. A pleasure to photograph.

Thanks to all of you for looking after me so well and making it such a fun day. Well done to Will too for winning the much sought after 'Uncle Ted' award which I will present to Jonathan & Olivia tomorrow. Just standing there next to me pointing out where we had go to on the list was utterly fantastic and hugely appreciated. Thank you, Will.

Irene & Tim's Wedding - Clandon Park, Surrey

From the moment I met Irene & Tim I knew that their wedding would be a complete smash in terms of everybody having just the best time ever and I now have a set of images with more smiles than I thought possible!

While Irene and the girls got ready at the nearby Talbot Inn, Tim and the guys were even closer at the very handily located Onslow Arms. Once at the stunning Clandon Park there was much hilarity as the guests arrived to a team of ushers ready and armed with little plastic stiletto caps for their shoes. Beautiful harp music in the gorgeous Great Hall before everyone entered the Tapestry Room for the ceremony. Irene and her bridesmaids walked down the aisle to be met by a beaming Tim and 120 guests. Lovely readings from John & Lucy and a very smiley exchange of vows and rings from both Irene & Tim plus their witnesses, Yvonne & Mike.

Back out into bright sunshine and some group photography plus a few shots of the two of them before heading downstairs for their meal. It was utterly delicious (thanks guys!) and the staff at Clandon were amazing. Tim was keen on a few black & white headshots of everyone so I did my best to be subtle but I think that it was an impossible task really. I LOVE the reactions from everybody so a big 'thank you' to everyone for making my job so much fun. The lighting was fantastic for Hollywood style portraits so hopefully I've done at least a few of you some justice?

Speeches from Stan, Ray & Yvonne for Irene with Yvonne causing a huge laugh when she recounted her tale of the $20 note that she and her big sister found as children. The 3 shots that I have of Stan laughing are priceless! Tim did a great job and then Mike finished the speeches and toasts with some hysterical stories about growing up with Tim. The room was absolutely filled with laughter and I'm so pleased I caught Tim's tears (sorry Tim...!)

Great DJ and some colourful lighting the end the night off and some mental dancing from quite a few enthusiasts. Tim and the guys had me in stiches and it really looked like everyone was in full swing as I left and drove the half an hour home. All in all a fabulous day with so much laughter & joy that it was a real pleasure.

Kit, Bertie & Family

I just love it when a family like this comes in and they are just 'up for it' in terms of having fun and being relaxed. Kit was a total star while I think that Bertie REALLY enjoyed the limelight. Bean (a gorgeous black Labrador) looked gorgeous & I even managed one of Mum! A lovely family shot too which I am thrilled with as groups aren't always easy.

Joanna & Alan's Wedding - Cotswold House, Chipping Campden - Gloucestershire

The celebrations kicked off on Friday evening with a quiz which was a great idea as it meant everyone met up before the big day. On Saturday everyone was rearing to go and Joanna and the girls got ready at Cotswold House with lots of laughing and very little fuss... except for the overflowing shower going all over the enormous bag of inflatables (more on them later!)

Alan headed off to the church to meet guests from all corners of the World and Joanna turned up bang on time, looking absolutely stunning as she walked down the aisle with her Father. It was a lovely and personal service conducted by Father Brennan at St Catherine with readings from Susan & Loli and prayers from Elena & Jonathan. I did laugh when I saw a photo of Father Brennan's two dachshunds in pride of place in front of the Register!

Prize to speediest ever recession definitely goes to these two - very surprised I managed to get them at all! [Biggest smile from Groom could also go to Alan I think] A few groups at the church before they jumped into their car and out and up to the stunning Landmark buildings swiftly followed by Nicola, Emma, Javier & Alan in a very sleek Aston Martin + some pink champagne. We worked our way back through Chipping Campden (via the East Banqueting House, the Alms Houses, and the Market Hall) arriving back at Cotswold House for a quick drink with everyone on the lawn. The meal looked delicious and was interspersed with brilliant speeches from Simon, John, Alan, Nicola (in which I cried... as did the videographer's wife - nice one Nicola!) and finally Joanna & Alan, who finally claimed his kiss (forbidden earlier by Father Brennan) to much cheering. Cake cutting and a bit of last minute inflatable blowing up... before Alan & Joanna hit the dance floor with a really nifty routine surrounded by popping flashbulbs.

And then everyone went totally and absolutely crazy on the dancefloor with fantastic inflatable hats, microphones, koalas, kangaroos (can you tell Joanna's an Aussie yet? Check out the furry koala in the car as they leave church) and numerous other insane inflatable props. Big tip to anyone planning a party - really, these have to be the best idea ever. Suddenly eveyone was wearing crazy plastic hats, playing plastic saxophones/guitars and singing like crazy lunatics into plastic microphones. All ninety guests were on the dancefloor immediately and they didn't move for the hour I was there. I grabbed a last shot of Joanna & Alan outside and left Chipping Campden with a lovely warm-hearted feeling.

The people of Chipping Campden couldn't have been more helpful, welcoming and lovely during my two days there - and the staff at Cotswold Hous e are completely amazing and go straight in to the top of my service and style awards for wedding venues.

Thanks for being so welcoming you two and for making my day such fun. You, Nicola, Emma, Javier, and Alan + your families & friends were all so lovely and a joy to photograph. x

Here are a few of one of my favourite pairs of siblings, Ben & Matthew. I had done some lovely shots of these two plus their Dad last year at Wakehurst & this time Mum brought them in for a very different kind of portrait. Ben is a real natural in front of the lens & with Matthew you take what you can get as he currently utterly facinated by planes, trains & automobiles!

Olivia & Jonathan's Pre-Wedding Shoot - Battle, East Sussex

I met up with Jonathan & Olivia on Bank Holiday Monday and we set off to Battle for a few shots in and around the Abbey. It was a really lovely building - facinating to photograph as it was very contrasty inside the ruins so lots of moody black & whites. Outside it became clear very quickly that Olivia & Jonathan are extremely good jumpers and can even manage a brilliant Morcambe & Wise walking away impression. To be honest, they are probably better at it than M&W were!

When we went back to Jonathan's Parents' home I couldn't resist taking a few shots in and around their amazing garden. Full of colour and lots of gorgeous plants and flowers. I am so looking forward to their wedding this Saturday and here's hoping that we have good weather.

Postcard from Amsterdam

So you're going to Amsterdam for 48 hours and were wondering what to do, where to stay etc...

Well, I've just had two very happy days there and can highly recommend:

1) The Blue Sheep - a fantastic little B&B within easy walking distance of everything but very quiet and with lovely hosts Jan & Novella. They have dogs, Nespresso and shampoo (I'd forgotten mine) and as far as I'm concerned that makes it a home away from home. It's both stylish and cosy.
2) Taking fantastic walking shoes as it's easy to walk everywhere plus there's also trams (pay on board) or hire a bike. To be honest though I would have probably died if I had cycled anywhere - they KNOW how to cycle & they take no prisoners. [The British Health & Safety Executive's heads would all explode if they visited Amsterdam for more than a minute - no helmets, cycling while using a mobile/umbrella/snogging etc.]
3) The 9 streets shopping area for funky shops selling fashion, shoes, handbags etc. Even a shop selling men's bags exclusively... They take their bags seriously in Amsterdam. Don't on any account visit the normal shopping area or go anywhere near Centraal Station.
4) Handbags & shoes - the most famous bag (and shoe) designer is Hester van Eeghen who has been in business for over 20 years. Fantastically colourful and stylish - probably a bit too much for me, so I found a wonderful designer near the Mirror Quarter on my walk back from visiting the fabulous Rijksmuseum (less busy than the Van Gogh Museum where it's best to buy your tickets before you leave home as it is also with the vast majority of museums.) Big thanks to Cindy Jeurissen for helping me try a gazillion options on her bag - what a fabulous idea - one bag but around two dozen different straps. Genius! A really lovely designer and definitely 'one to watch'.
5) Anne Frank Museum - amazing experience and mot to be missed. Either book online to beat the queues or go at 8pm as it closed at 9pm and you only need an hour.
6) If you can do go and see what's considered to be the best Orchestra in the World - The Royal Concertgebouw - who had me in stiches on Wednesday night during their final piece. They all went completely mental - the sound was astonishing and even the Dutch looked at each other in amazement. Delicious restaurant next door too (Brasserie Keyzer) with Concert Menu two courses for 31.50 Euro and they guarantee to serve you within an hour so you're not late for the concert. Read with interest (afterwards) poor review on Trip Advisor because there was a rat running over the tables... lol. [Keep your ticket for the concert as it gets you free tram back to your hotel/b&b]
7) Check out possibly the smallest car in the World - (see photo) - it's called a Canta & it's truly tiny. Very Postman Pat.
8) Go fuzzy-eyed with all the delftware on display everywhere - very pretty but not cheap.
9) You have to visit FOAM which is a real haven from crowds and has some very interesting photographic exhibitions. A very peaceful and happening place.
10) And finally I guess you'll just happen across the odd canal or two during your stay... Beautiful, even in the rain.

It's really very nice not having loads of cars flying all over the place although I think you're as likely to be wiped out by a bike. You may see the odd clog, cheese shop, orange 'Holland' t-shirt, tulip, or red light - you may even smell the odd waft of funny smelling tobacco - but these aspects came pretty low down on the overall flavour of the City during my brief stay.

I saw this wonderful quote on a shop window and it reminded me of my friend Rebecca who I know lives by this setiment.

You're only here for a short visit... "Don't hurry, don't worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way" Walter Hagen

And that's what I take away from my trip to Amsterdam. Oh yes, plus the fact they seem to really like dogs & take them everywhere - unlike in London where I understand they are shortly to be banned... (ok, so a slight exaggeration - I really shouldn't read the Daily Mail... ha ha ha).

Ingrid & Anna

I really enjoy working with twins because you can see their very different personalities as you photograph them. Anna & Ingrid's Mum told me that these two very rarely wear the same thing so she was surprised when they both decided to come in judo gear. I was blown away when they turned up & with headbands and flags too... fantastic.

Ingrid's wish came true with this levetating shot & I love Anna's look here - as if she's looking at me and thinking, 'you are quite mad'... (which I am of course).

We had great fun doing judo moves plus lots of cool jumping (I'm still working on these - they're fab) - the energy from these two was amazing. I was shattered afterwards and I wasn't even doing the jumping! Thanks so much you two. x

Three Gorgeous Siblings

I've photographed these three twice before so I wanted to try something a little different. We did some serious ones against a dark background before cheering up and moving to the 'light side'. I do enjoy experimenting and it's interesting to see what a huge difference a simple backdrop change makes.

I did love R's wonderful chicken shirt and obviously wanted one myself but they only make them for kids (sob). And I really like T's stance in her smock - it looks just right - a really great shot. And finally huge thanks to E for allowing me to include her in my eleven year old (in age) project. Really looking forward to taking some more in the Summer holidays.

Ursula's Special Birthday Lunch

I love it when families ask me to photograph them before a special lunch - it's a great opportunity to mark the occassion with a photograph. A combination of shots needn't take more than 20 or 30 minutes and is quite a fun way to warm up before the main event.

Well, I've been very blessed with my recent portraits - two more fantastic subjects willing to go a little crazy. Isabel turned up in her pjs with cool bed hair which I thought was fantastic, while Daniel wanted to show off his footballing skills meaning I had to duck every now and again!

And don't you just love it when siblings hug? Check out Daniel trying hard to look cool while Isabel gives him a big squeeze. Brilliant.

What Makes a Good Photographer?

I was pondering this question last week as I drove into London for a three day school prospectus shoot. And within 24 hours of working with everyone at Alpha Prep I had my answer:

Q: What Makes A Good Photographer?
A: Good Clients

It's as simple as that. When I work with my clients I think it's important that they understand how I work and how passionate I am about providing both a superb service and fantastic images. Once they're on board with this - and most people realise this about me very quickly - it becomes a true collaboration and they start to challenge me. They are encouraging and relaxed about working with me and this is what makes great photographs. Trust is vital and I try to ensure that I respect each and every client every step of the way. Once all of these aspects are in place most clients can tell that things are going well when one of two things happen:

1. I laugh... (loudly & a lot)
2. I go very quiet which means I'm on to a great shot

And last week working with Alpha again was when I realised this and it's made me more determined than ever to keep on working with lovely clients like them who really value what I do and how I do it.

When I complete a job a simple 'thank you' means the World to me - I feel lucky enough to have worked with fantastic people in warm and relaxing surroundings. And that's why I am deeply touched when my clients give me a present. They really aren't necessary because the job itself is a reward but I do get a huge amount of joy from them. I know that I shouldn't really post photos of my many gifts because it might make future clients think that they have to buy me something (!) but to them please don't be swayed - I really do love my job & that is already the icing on the cake.

So to Clare & Shaun & Alpha Prep a huge 'THANK YOU' for the lovely flowers and delicious choccies. Clare, eating a box of Hotel Chocolat chocolates is probably the most indulgent thing you can do. I made sure that I ate them in bed watching TV just to really make the most of them... he he he.

And the reson that I've only photographed one corner of Alpha's gift is that there are quite a few missing already!

... what diet?!

I absolutely loved working with Rosa who is one of the most comfortable children I have ever seen in front of the camera. She's extremely photogenic and really good fun. We had a great time collaborating with each other.

I love it when people leap up and down - they look so utterly joyful. When I was working with Jonathan & Olivia on Monday down in Battle they suggested leaping. They were brilliant and I nearly died laughing.

Seriously everyone, when you get home from work try leaping off something with your kids or just on your own... it really is fun. Just watch out for injuries though - I don't want to be held responsible for my 40-something friends having to admit in A&E that they got hurt jumping. Very embarrassing.

Amy & Katie

Gosh, I had such fun with Amy & Katie who laughed loads and were totally up for trying out new ideas. I'm not quite sure who laughed the most but I'm guessing it was probably me. It reminded me of a session I did outside the Royal Albert Hall one summer... My clients turned around at one point when I asked if they could hear me laughing when I was using my long lens and was around 100 metres away from them. Chris responded by telling me that he wouldn't be surprised if the entire audience in the Albert Hall could hear me...

This is beautiful Alexander with his Mummy & Daddy. I have to say that he was the most perfectly behaved baby and so good in front of the camera... an absolute natural!

He was also thoroughly engaging which enabled me to get a gorgeous selection of shots. Big thanks to both Mum & Dad for being so easy to work with and for making the session so much fun. I can't wait to put your frame together (and the prints of course) - it's going to look amazing. Emma x

Izi & Twiglet

I have been terrible and not updated my blog for ages because I am working harder than ever before for this time of year. So here's a recent portrait of Izi with her gorgeous working cocker spaniel, Twiglet. Twiglet is one of the most boisterous spaniels that I've ever met so I had to be a little cunning getting her to sit still. Thanks for the ham pieces, Harriet!

Of course any of you who have met my own springer spaniel, Fred, will know that he is a huge poser because he's seen me taking photographs ever since he was born just over 5 years ago. If I try and photograph a client he usually tries to stand between the two of us in order for his close up... Hysterical!

Clare & Shaun's Wedding - Newick Park, East Sussex

I always knew that I would love Clare & Shaun's wedding from the moment I met them - it was a blast from beginning to end and a real party atmosphere for everyone. The sun shone pretty much all day to herald the start of Spring, although it was pretty nippy so we only ventured out for 3 minutes and managed a quick sprint across the lawn!

Shaun wore a stunning suit by Charlie Allen and I'm a real sucker for a nice suit and all the bloke bits that go with it - nice socks Shaun! Best 'man' came in the form of the marvellous Sue who helped me SO much with the slightly complicated group arrangements... I have no idea what I would have done without her and both sides of the families who made my job almost seamless (even if it didn't feel that way!) I have your 'Uncle Ted' award badge here ready for Shaun to collect tomorrow, so a massive thank you and well done... they are hard to win, I can assure you. [A quick mention of Eloise and Samuel who I think all children should be modelled on. They looked gorgeous and behaved impecably - thanks to you both for being such a joy to photograph]

Newick Park looked wonderful in the March light and the flower decorations throughout looked amazing. Beautiful antique glass vases of all sizes and shapes containing either a single flower or a tealight. A very clever idea as they continue to stand out as the day progesses and the candles are lit. Brilliant. The theme was fabulous too - green and whites using roses, green chillies, whole limes, rosemary and lots of other spring creams and whites. This really was an interesting and fun selection and made photographing all things floral really inspiring. I knew that Clare was a 'planner' and I have to say that this really showed everywhere you looked.

Upstairs I walked into Clare's room and was blown away by her simply gorgeous dress with feature black sash and lovely sparkly broach. Black fingernails for a touch of funky. Loved it! She looked drop dead stunning and it was nice to have a few moments with her family before they all made their way downstairs for the ceremony.

A simple and fun ceremony with beautiful readings and lots of laughter & giggling between Clare and Shaun during the vows and exchange of rings. And then back out to drinks and a few groups plus some shots of just the two of them making good use of the stairs at Newick (thank goodness for those stairs!) An 'everyone' shot in the lobby was certainly a risk but it tied in nicely with the cake cutting - I think it worked out pretty well too.

The meal was delicious and I was given copious amounts of lemonade. Thanks for ensuring that I was so well looked after - it was so appreciated. A big thanks to to my partner in crime on the food front. Every wedding I pick on a poor unfortunate guest to help me get the food shots and Giles is so far the clear winner in the helpfulness stakes. He even came to find me on one occassion which was totally beyond the call of duty... 'thank you'.

The speeches were fantastic with Shaun's 'circle of trust' / horse's head (Meet the Parents vs The Godfather) moment causing much hysteria... Perry's reaction was brilliant. And then it was that moment that all the guests go crazy with their cameras... the first dance. They did brilliantly and the band were fabulous. Hullabaloo blew everyone away and I left just as everyone went completely crazy on the dance floor.

Thank you to everyone there for making the day such fun for me and for being so helpful. I hope that I've done you all justice & hope you all enjoy the shots! Emma x

Back to Reality!

Apologies to Clare & Shaun's family and friends who have been very patient with me as I took my annual holiday for 3 weeks in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. Along with the Easter break I have now had a massive 4 weeks off and have been hard at work editing this week ready to see Clare & Shaun tomorrow.

The holiday was fantastic - I do love Fuerteventura - and I did a huge amount of swimming and reading. I managed to swim 1,000 metres a day so altogether just over 13 miles. And I read my usual book a day with some great highlights in the form of 2 from Markus Zusak ('Getting the Girl' & 'I am the Messenger') both of which I heartily recommend, especially if you liked his 'The Book Thief'. If you have teenagers as well as Markus Zusak I also thoroughly enjoy 'Naive, Super' by Erlend Loe. On the epic front I loved 'Guernica' by Dave Boling (much better than Captain Corelli). I also took the complete boxed set of all 5 series of 'The Wire' but only managed 6 episodes and have been loving watching them since my return. Makes London seem very pedestrian!

I took my brand new Toshiba netbook with me so that I could make Skype calls to potential wedding clients. There's something very satisying about running your business on the beach!

And finally, no trip to the Island would be complete with a few shots of their annual carnival night. This year's theme was 'Jungle' but I think they must have run out of animal skin fabric as there were a lot of alternative outfits on show, some of which you'll see below.

It's not bad my little Canon Ixus and a lot lighter than my Nikon D3s! Looking forward to the real world of work again and feeling thoroughly relaxed and happy...

Clare & Shaun's Pre-Wedding - Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Well, the weather has been totally yucky for weeks now, but a couple of weeks ago I traveled to Tunbridge Wells in bright sunshine for Clare & Shaun's pre-wedding shoot... it was quite amazing.

I first met Clare & Shaun in November 2008 so it's been quite a while since I'd seen them & we really couldn't have chosen a nicer day. We went to High Rocks in Tunbridge Wells and pretty much had them all to ourselves. I hadn't been since I was a child and it is just as impressive all these (ahem) years later. It was freezing cold though but that didn't stop Clare & Shaun practicing their 1st dance in the frost!

We headed home for me to meet Patsy & Pickle (I always like to take photos of my clients' pets) who were absolutely gorgeous. Patsy is like a cat model and appears to love having her photograph taken. She looks so brilliant going for the clothes tag. Pickle, on the other hand, is difficult to pin down (not literally of course) but I think I got there in the end.

And then we headed into town and the Pantiles for a delicious sandwich and hot chocolate before embarrassing them both by taking shots of them near their local pub. All in all I had a fantastic time and am so excited about working with them both next month. Thank you for looking after me and making it such fun. See you soon. x

I love doing corporate headshots because you have only minutes to get the best out of your subjects which is a massive challenge.
